WHAT IS 'THE BASEMENT'?

Lyndon LaRouche’s fundamental discovery underlying his science of physical economics centers upon the understanding that the advance of human society is fundamentally defined by revolutionary leaps in the scientific and creative powers of the human mind. Thus, in 2006 Lyndon LaRouche created a new scientific research institution – nicknamed “the Basement” – focused on developing greater understandings of the creative powers of the human mind, and applying this to the advancement of mankind.

The institution of the Basement was built around a rigorous reworking of a “narrow path” of the original scientific discoveries which created modern science, and the application of this unique methodological understanding to frontier challenges in science and physical economics. This included research teams reworking key discoveries of Nicholas of Cusa, Johannes Kepler, Pierre de Fermat, Gottfried Leibniz, Carl Gauss, Bernard Riemann, Max Planck, Albert Einstein, Vladimir Vernadsky, and Lyndon LaRouche, and producing of a series of pedagogical websites, designed to aid in the re-experiencing of the original discoveries of these great minds.

Since 2010, the methodological insight developed by this work has become the basis for an entire array of frontier projects, including ongoing studies of major physical economic development projects; the economic development of the Solar System, including planetary defense and mining He-3 from the Moon; the anti-entropic evolutionary development of life on Earth, and the electromagnetic, field, and cosmic aspects of life; and investigations into potential new fundamental principles of physics, as expressed in galactic and supra-galactic systems in the very large, and in the development of controlled fusion reactions and associated processes in the very small.

It is mankind’s nature to continuously progress and develop, making science and the creative powers of the human mind central to political, cultural, and economic progress.

LATEST WORK FROM THE BASEMENT

By Benjamin Deniston and Meghan Rouillard In the spring of 2015 the LaRouche PAC science team defined a perspective for addressing the water crisis in California and other locations based on recently developing insights into the role of our Galactic System in shaping climate, weather, and the behavior of the water cycle on Earth. However, this is just one aspect of understanding our Galactic System, and how it relates to processes in our Solar System and on earth. In this report we will recognize that galactic water perspective as just one expression of a deeper relation to our Galactic System. In what follows we will examine a broader perspective for understanding the higher-order system which is our Galaxy, in pursuit of a universal physical principle of the Galactic System.

By Benjamin DenistonAs has been covered by Lyndon LaRouche and his EIR magazine for decades, the water situation in California (and the entire Southwest) has been heading towards a crisis, and new initiatives are needed to secure the future of the region. Despite coverage, warnings, and repeated campaigns by LaRouche and his associates, this issue has not been addressed, and we are looking into the beginning of the depths of a new stage in the crisis. Here we will again address this challenge, but from a new vantage point.

By Jason Ross Vladimir Vernadsky’s concept of the different phase spaces of abiotic processes, life, and cognition, serve to illustrate the errors of trying to build up the entire universe from abiotic processes, through the implicit rejection of the possible existence of uniquely biological or noetic principles. In his 1930 “The Study of Life and the New Physics,” Vernadsky directly addresses the hereditary errors in the Cosmos of Newton: that the concepts of space, time, energy, and matter are final, that they can be determined from purely abiotic experiments, and that there is a fundamental distinction between the studied universe and the minds that study it.

By Benjamin Deniston With the rise of a new strategic alliance on the planet centered around the BRICS nations, comes the potential for a scientifically valid conception of the creative nature of mankind to govern the planet, and beyond.

AREAS OF INVESTIGATION

Managing the Global Water Cycle

With over 70% of the Earth’s surface covered in water, and 4 billion human beings without a safe, reliable water supply, to call the current crisis a drought, is a misnomer. This is not simply a supply crisis, this a political crisis, an economic crisis, and more profoundly, this is a crisis in thinking. Today’s world water dilemma will only be solved by recognizing mankind’s obligation to act as the caretaker of Earth—to be a creative force, continuously improving the conditions across the planet, and beyond. Whether modern-day environmentalists like it or not, the scientific reality is that mankind is the only species with the capability to continuously re-shape and improve the surface of the planet.

Energy-Flux Density

If we are going to create a functioning and just global economy, more money or mere ‘regulations’ won’t cut it. Only the introduction of a new, higher conception of the physical principles driving economic development can guarantee an economic renaissance. Lyndon LaRouche’s discovery of the concept of Energy-flux density provides a revolutionary step forward in that direction.

The Vernadsky Project

Throughout the work of Ukrainian-Russian biogeochemist Vladimir Vernadsky, we find a powerful argument for why processes on Earth, and in the Universe, are organized according to a top-down principle of life, and, even higher, human cognition. This is a concept found throughout the writings and speeches of economist Lyndon LaRouche, who has often referenced the work of Vernadsky.

Helium-3 and the Chinese Lunar Program

China’s successful December 2013 landing of their Yutu rover on the Moon has brought a new focus to the importance of our planetary neighbor for the future of mankind. As has been highlighted by leading Chinese officials, the Moon’s surface is filled with the a special fusion fuel, practically absent from the Earth—Helium-3. With China’s return to the lunar surface, Lyndon LaRouche has emphasized that a program for the economic development of the Moon in conjunction with a crash program for fusion power would be one of the most important scientific driver programs for mankind.

A Fusion Economy

The greatest changes in human economy cannot be understood numerically or quantitatively; they are large-scale changes corresponding to major developments in evolution. Our understanding of physical chemistry has advanced from the fire of Prometheus, which brought in the Bronze Age, to the development of steam power and chemistry, to the largely untrod landscape of the nuclear world, which promises levels of power millions of times beyond those achievable by chemical processes. Moving beyond current fission power to a nuclear economy, would mean the potential to end many of the problems plaguing us—shortages of power, water, and materials—and put us in a position to operate on the scale of the solar system.

The Narrow Path

To know economics (or really, to know anything), you must start with a basis of really knowing something. For LaRouche, the need to educate a growing movement of young adults meant providing a visceral understanding of creativity itself, through the domains of both art/music and science. A “narrow path” of profound discoveries was chosen as a theme of study: from Plato to Cusa to Kepler to Leibniz, and passing from Gauss to Riemann. More recently, LaRouche has developed two triads in science: that of Brunelleschi, Cusa, and Kepler, and then Planck, Einstein, and Vernadsky. Get inside science to know the secret of economics: how valid new thoughts are produced.

The Extended Sensorium

While seeing may be believing, it definitely isn't knowing. Studying the sensorium itself provides new insights into the extent to which our sense-apparatus shapes our thought, without our knowing it, and how our relationship to our extended sensorium of scientific apparatus must be seen similarly.
