China Infrastructure in Maldives

December 4, 2014

Continuing to expand their investments in the nations along the Maritime Silk Road, China and Maldives signed a Memorandum of Understanding for a study of a proposed bridge connecting the Maldives international airport to the capital city of Male. Beijing Urban Construction Group Company Limited has the contract.

Maldives cancelled a $511 million deal with an Indian firm two years ago in a period of concern over Islamic extremism in the country. During a visit to Maldives, which extends south from the southern tip of India into the Indian Ocean, Chinese President Xi Jinping suggested the bridge be named the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge, reports the Brics Post yesterday. During that trip the Maldives gave full support to President Xi Jinping's concept of renewal of the Maritime Silk Road.
