May 16 (LPAC)--A resolution calling on the U.S. House of Representatives to initiate impeachment proceedings against President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney was passed unanimously today by the Detroit City Council. The resolution was co-sponsored by Council President Pro Tempore Monica Conyers (wife of House Judiciary Committee chairman Rep. John Conyers), and Council Member JoAnn Watson. Detroit is also the district that Judiciary Chairman Conyers represents in the U.S. Congress.
Recall that on April 30-May 1, at the California State Democratic Party convention in San Diego, LPAC and the LaRouche Youth Movement played a major role in getting a resolution passed at that convention that included mention of the impeachment of Dick Cheney. California's Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D) is the Speaker of the House.
As grounds for impeachment, the resolution charges that Bush and Cheney:
* conspired to intentionally mislead Congress and the public to justify the war against Iraq;
* ordered the National Security Agency to conduct illegal electronic surveillance of American civilians;
* conspired to commit torture of prisoners; and
* stripped American citizens of their rights by ordering indefinite detention without access to legal counsel and the courts.
The resolution calls on Detroit's Senators and Representatives in the U.S. Congress to cause impeachment proceedings to be instituted, and instructs the Clerk of the City of Detroit to officially certify the Resolution as a petition to the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
Almost 90 cities across the country have already adopted similar resolutions, and Rep. Dennis Kucinich has introduced an impeachment resolution in the House.
