Good morning its Monday, january 14th 2013 this is the lpac daily podcast. This podcast goes out every day around noon eastern 9am pacific.
The start of a new week there's a number of things brewing. The US Congress will be in session Monday through Wednesday and we're going to be in Washington DC throughout, going on an offensive both on the 3-point progam and on ousting Obama for his crimes in Benghazi. In the next few weeks we also have confirmation hearings on the president's new cabinet posts including John Kerry and John Brennan and Jack Lew. The opposition to Brennan and Lew in particular is frothing a bit and i'll mention that in a second.
First I want to mention a few developments on Benghazigate.
Apparently the deputy emir of the Al Qaeda linked Libyan Islamic Fighting Group, Khalid Al-Sharif, has now been appointed as the deputy minister of defense of Libya. This guy was captured in Peshuar in 2003 after escaping the US invasion of Afghanistan, and was transferred to Libya in 2005 to the same prison in Tripoli that was shared by Sufjan bin Qumu, who is the current leader of the Al Qaeda linked Ansar al Shria and is a former inmate of Guantanamo bay. I know that's a lot of names but to appreciate the implications of this fully you have to read our fact sheet which is constantly updated, or updated every week, "Is the Obama administration allied with Al Qaeda in Libya & Syria" that's available from the frontpage.
Now on January 12th apparently there was an attack on the Italian consul general as he was leaving his consulate in Benghazi, so you hae this, you have the abduction of the acting head of the criminal investigation department in Benghazi, a failed assassination attempt against the President of Libya, and this al-qaeda affiliate now appointed to a signfigant government post on top of that.
What this represents a further consolidation of Al-Qaeda control of Libya by in the post Qadaffi-era, an era that would not have been possible with constant support by the Obama adiministration, in violation of hte war powers act. It was obama's intervention and his support and funding of Libyan rebels rife with Al-Qaeda operatives that created a libya that is now a breeding ground for the resurgence and proliferation of terrorists networks and al-qaeda in the region.
Now the senate GOP has made public a list of 14 unanswered questions on Benghazi for the Administration, and some are not bad, we'll have that list on our website today, but it does not grasp that Al Qaeda didn't just come in after Qadaffi was gone, Obama allied with Al Qaeda elements to overthrow Qadaffi, and they're the same sorts, and in some cases, the litteral same people, now as a migration has begun to take place, who we are supporting to overthrow Assad in Syria.
If they truly want to get to the bottom of what happened in Benghazi and prevent a repeat in the future, they are going to have to do better. They're going to have to approach it the way we have, and again we're going to be pressing them on that all week in DC.
Now the other thing, the other important thing, as I mentioned in the Friday podcast, is with Congress coming into session later today we have the first opportunities for co-sponsors to HR-129 which restores Glass-Steagall. This is the first time congress has been back in session since the bill was introduced so we have an opportunity now to begin to lay into these representatives. So in some ways that fight begins today but in a lot of ways, this fight has been building steam and building steam and getting more and more intense over the past 6 years.
We had the chief economist of prosperity capital in London Liam Halligan with a column in the Daily Telegraph demanding Glass-Steaall, pointing to HR-129, in which he said, "...without a Glass-Steagall style separation of commercial and investment banking, we're doing nothing but lining ourselves up for another disastrous collapse..." and then later "...the Glass-steagall battle isn't over yet, on either side of the Altantic. Not by a long chalk. We can only hope it doesn't take another crash to force our governments to see the sense..."
One statistic we keep pointing to is that Glass-Steagall has 60% support by the british house of commons, we had 87 co-sponsors in the 112th congress for Glass-Steagall and the calls are for it are yet becoming increasingly vociferous. We now have two reports on our frontpage summarizing the fight so far and I suggest people go look at them.
I remember in 2007 when I was canvasing and doing field organizing, I think I was like 20 years old, having to have Glass-Steagall explained to me for the first time because Bear Stearns had just tanked, and LaRouche had recently called for Glass-Steagall to be reintroduced. At that time at the moment of that crash beginning which LaRouche famously predicted and we play that soundbite all the time, but LaRouche said the thing was coming down, Bear Stearns went, and then Lehman went, and then everything began to disintegrate, but NO one other than us at that time was talking about Glass-Steagall.
Then throughout that period we were pushing our HBPA legislation and we went to hundreds of city counsels, a number of them, a signifigant number of them passing HBPA endorsements all across the country, and we began talking about Glass-Steagall in those districts and we began pressing it in Washington DC.
LaRouchePAC has since shifted a major focus to congress and to pressign them on Glass-Steagall as the first step in LaRouche's three point program, and since we first began that fight with the intensive organizing effort with the HBPA, we've had McCain-Cantwell which attempted to put Glass-Steagall into Dodd-Frank, we've had a number of congressman and senators press glass-steagall publicly, several of them in 2012 had it as a major feature of their election campaigns, and we even had an oscar winning documentary which, while problematic in certain aspects, did mention that Glass-steagall's repeal was the major cause of the 2008 blow out.
That same documentary incidently made the point that Obama is a wall street president, and true to form, Obama blocked Cantwell-McCain, appointed and backed now two treasury secretaries that are Wall-Street whores, complicit in lying about rate rigging in one case with LIBOR, and another who is litterally a securities trader, and has done everything he can to stop Glass-Steagall.
People need to realize this, not simple that Glass-Steagall is the single most important measure in congress right now, and must be passed to get the ball rolling on the three-point policy program, but Obama must be confronted, must be removed not only for the violations of constitntional principle, but because he's the major block to economic recovery.
Again we'll be in DC all week. Dennis who usually opens the week with these podcasts should be back either tomorrow or by Wednesday.
