Official Chinese news agency Xinhua attacked U.S. Senator John Kerry's statements in favor Of Obama's belligerent South China Sea policy. Kerry had argued that the US should ratify the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea so that it cold directly intervene to counter China.
Xinhua stated that his comments "exposed the country's selfish intentions for the South China Sea, an area where the United States has no claims to sovereignty and is not a party in disputes there."
Kerry, chairman of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, said during a hearing on the convention held Wednesday that China and other countries are 'staking out illegal claims in the South China Sea and elsewhere.' He added that becoming a party to the treaty would provide an immediate boost to U.S. credibility 'as we push back against excessive maritime claims and illegal restrictions on our warships or commercial vessels.'
