LAROUCHEPAC:
"This is a change in the geopolitical dynamic," are the words used to summarize the upshot of the Copenhagen Summit by an apoplectic but anonymous senior developed country official, cited by an equally apoplectic article in the Financial Times of London Dec. 21. "Copenhagen had been the defining moment of a new world order, in which powerful developing economies, such as China and India, can dictate their terms to the rest of the world," the horrified Financial Times authors wrote.
An equally outraged Financial Times editorial sputtered about "the dismal outcome," saying the Copenhagen fiasco "was worse than useless" because "loss of momentum is now the danger"— meaning the British imperialists are going to have trouble getting their way, now that the global dynamic has shifted against them.
British Prime Minister Gordon Brown gave free rein to his outrage that the "future be held ransom by only a handful of countries"— who, after all, only represent some 3 billion human beings. How dare they? "Never again should we face the deadlock that threatened to pull down those talks... We will not allow a few countries to hold us back."
Brown harrumphed that, if only there were a global police state to stop such obstructionism, things would improve: "One of the frustrations for me was the lack of a global body with the sole responsibility for environmental stewardship." To remedy that defect, Brown announced that he and French President Nicolas Sarkozy were going to propose that the EU be emissions policeman not just for the EU, but for the whole world. According to the Daily Telegraph, "the plan emerged after U.S. President Barack Obama suggested that monitoring could be done using spy satellites."
