LAROUCHEPAC:
President Obama "has all but ignored" William Thompson, the black Democrat running for New York City mayor, and he has instead "embraced" the incumbent mayor, Michael Bloomberg, who is running for re-election on the Republican ticket in the Nov. 3 election, reports the Oct. 7 New York Times.
"Since Mr. Obama's election, Mr. Thompson, the city's comptroller, has found his attempts to piggyback on Mr. Obama's popularity drowned out by ... Bloomberg, who has tethered himself to the president," says the Times, which adds that "Bloomberg has met with the President four times since his inauguration, held public events with four of his cabinet members, and heaped praise on the new Administration at every turn, no matter how mundane the occasion."
And Bloomberg has endorsed Obama's health plan (following in the steps of his partner in brutal austerity, California Governor Arnie Schwarzenegger). Bloomberg has paid for robo-calls to 300,000 voters, saying "Like President Obama, Mayor Bloomberg says it's time to put politics aside." Obama, in return, has called Bloomberg an "outstanding mayor."
Meanwhile, Democrat Thompson, who campaigned for Obama in the 2008 presidential elections, and who is running on Obama's theme of "change," sought Obama's endorsement months ago, but has been so far been rebuffed. As the Times puts it: "He trails Mr. Bloomberg in name recognition, money, endorsements and, now, love from the nation's top Democrat."
As if to rub it in, yesterday Bloomberg accepted the endorsement of John Podesta, a close Obama ally (and the head of the Soros-financed Center for American Progress), who ran Obama's transition team last fall.
