July 1, 2008 -- President Lech Kaczynski said in Warsaw last night that for him, for now, the treaty question is pointless. It's hard to say how it will end. But, to claim there is no Union because there is no treaty is not serious. Kaczynski said the treaty is blocked, because with Ireland voting no, the principle of unanimity among the 27 EU member states no longer permits proceeding on the treaty. The principle of unanimity is binding here, he said, stressing that Poland must protect small EU countries' rights, as it is not a major EU power itself (and does not want to be bullied by the big ones). If the principle of unanimity is broken once, it will cease to exist forever. We are too weak to accept this kind of solution.
After German President Horst Koehler's announcement yesterday that he will not sign, pending the decision of the cases still before the Constitutional Court, it is generally expected, as most of the media report, that a ruling of the Court of Germany may not be made for several months, which takes the entire case way into 2009, like the case to be examined in Czechia by the Constitutional Court there.
