September 14, 2007 (LPAC)--In the past week, the LaRouche Youth Movement has brought LaRouche's Homeowners and Banking Protection Act to three different State Houses around the country, where we found a tremendous response. These deployments have been in the wake of the first public endorsement of the legislation by Missouri State Representative Juanita Walton. Our lunge used in these meetings was to pressure these legislators to immediately introduce LaRouche's firewall legislation into their respective state houses. In all three deployments, the ground work has been laid to make the introduction of our resolution a reality. The local response to this mobilization has been a stark contrast to the Rip Van Winkles in Congress who seem to be sleeping through the revolt led by their constituencies. The Congress at this stage, preferring to bail out hedge funds rather than put up the money for this firewall legislation, are acting like British firemen carrying barrels of cold gasoline to throw on a fire.
If one's axioms scream and rail against the concept of federal intervention of any kind, then why would these free trade fanatics in Congress support bailouts of the hedge funds? Do they want to be tools of the British? The Texas state legislature was hit hard with this paradox by our organizers, with the effect of recognition by staffers that the protection of our citizens from the Cayman Island hedge fund pirates is essential for the General Welfare. When the staffers in Texas were brought to realize that it was wrong to just blame either the gullible home owners or the predatory lenders, it opened up discussion about the real enemy, the British control of the hedge fund apparatus being used as a tool for dictatorship. Not many staffers objected to this formulation.
In Texas, we had 52 meetings with legislative aides in just two days. With discussion being focused on the legislation and the British, many breakthroughs were generated. After a discussion about NAWAPA, infrastructure, and nuclear desalination, one staffer, a hydrogeologist, said that she couldn't wait to tell her legislator about this legislation. She gave us his district information so that we can set up a meeting directly with him. They played LaRouche's audio address on the crisis to 50 of the 52 offices visited. It was observed how the LYM is an inspiration to our generation, the staffers most ready to move on this and talk to their representatives were in the 18-25 age bracket.
In Lansing, Michigan, a good portion of the legislators themselves are in the 25-35 age bracket. With the response that our LYM organizers got from the legislators in the past week, its no exaggeration to say that there exists the potential to build a LaRouche caucus in the Michigan legislature. One staffer of a Republican told us that our legislation was emailed to ALL the offices with links to our website, and that a lot of staffers are talking about this legislation amongst themselves. "And when that happens, then you know soon that they'll be yapping to their bosses about it," the staffer added. Many Republicans argued with the line about how the home owners shouldn't be protected from the bad decisions they have made, but many were forced to admit that there exists a malicious intent behind the banks that lend subprime mortgages. Another legislator, who seems to know a little about our methods, prefaced the meeting by demanding that there be no discussion about the last 3,000 years of history! His aide ended the meeting by saying that he recognizes that the LYM are some of the very few people around the Michigan State Legislature that have any conviction behind what they are saying.
In targeting Detroit area reps that we are already in contact with, we ran into many interesting responses. One representative said "this is big, this is big!" as his eyes got bigger. We got a pledge from another representative that he would introduce the legislation. When we went to his office to meet him, however, he expressed doubts, saying that we couldn't wait for the federal government to move on this crisis, that, for Detroit, there has to be something more immediate. This rep said that LaRouche has some, really great ideas, but they exist outside the system in which the State Legislature is operating. This caused a good discussion on the subject of leadership, challenging the representative to place his identity in history. He was certainly intrigued, and will have his staff look at the legislation.
In Boston, Massachusetts, our organizers stormed the capital in force to see how many impromptu meetings we could have. This approached proved to be successful, we ended the day with a total of 36 meetings. A few of the aides we talked to had read it, studied it, and had some good questions. In one case, our organizers were unable to answer a staffer's questions, so we put him in touch with one of our economists from our national center. This young 23 year old staffer assured us that the Senator he represents is going to know why the federal government must step in. Another Senator’s L.D. said, “we’re getting calls everyday from our constituents that are being foreclosed on, and I don’t know what to tell them.”
Interesting to note is the case of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. One staffer from an office representing Cape Cod called us back, riveted by the housing crisis. She pointed out to us that Cape Cod is a community that is completely freaked out by the situation in real estate. The crisis may not impact rich vacationers to the Cape, but it does impact those that work in the Cape Cod service economy servicing the vacationers. She set us up a meeting with her boss, and gave us the names of the representatives for the Cape Cod area, telling us that these representatives will be very open to what we have to say.
Lyndon LaRouche has stressed that the fight for the Homeowners and Bank Protection Act will be won at the state level. Organizing at these state houses has given us a good survey of how various communities have been affected by this crisis. The situation is dire for all involved. Help us to organize these layers, giving them the courage that was shown by Missouri State Legislator Juanita Walton in being the first to publicly endorse LaRouche's plan to action.
