Iraq War Debacle: Civilian Death Toll Running Ahead of 2006

August 25, 2007 (LPAC)--According to an analysis by the Associated Press, more Iraqis have died due to war related violence through August of 2007 than died in all of 2006. AP reported 13,811 deaths, last year, and 14,800 so far this year. The Iraqi Red Crescent organization also reports that the number of internally displaced Iraqis increased from 411,337 on January first to 1.14 million on July 31.

All of this has happened in spite of the addition of 30,000 US troops to wage a campaign to "secure" Baghdad. The one difference is that Baghdad accounts for only about half of all sectarian deaths, compared to 76 percent in 2006, reflecting the move of sectarian and militia groups to other parts of the country.
