Explosive New Swedish TV Program on BAE-SAAB Bribery Scandal

July 27, 2007 (LPAC)--On July 25th, during prime time, Swedish Television TV1, broadcast a new one-hour follow-up documentary on the international BAE-SAAB weapon bribery scandal. It showed how the bribes which fixed the weapons deals for BAE-SAAB were funneled through shell companies, like Valurex in the Caribbean, via Count Alfons Mensdorff-Pouilly in both the Czech deal and the Hungarian deal. This central role of the Austrian agent Count Alfons Mensdorff-Pouilly, who had been exposed earlier as the secret agent contracted by BAE, SAAB's partner in the sale and leasing of the JAS Gripen Swedish SAAB fighter jets to the Czech Republic, was again highlighted. The secret documents which were the source for the revelations about Count Mensdorff-Pouilly, were all obtained as part of the on-going BAE investigations. David Leigh, investigative journalist for the Guardian newspaper in London, emphasized both at the beginning and at the end of the program, that the revelations involving the use of bribery by BAE together with its Swedish partner SAAB, "should have seismic political effects in Sweden."

The new revelations in this latest broadcast were the direct role of the Swedish elite in approving dirty weapons deals involving the BAE-Bofors manufactured Carl Gustaf recoiless rifle (the preferred weapon for British and American troops in Iraq), for a total of approximately $1 billion . The Wallenberg financial interests, and the Swedish political elites from both the so-called left Social Democrats and the so-called right-wing Conservatives (Moderaterna) were shown to have approved all of these approximately 1 billion dollars in weapons trade with countries, such as the UK and the U.S.A. It was also shown that these weapons were and are clearly being used in combat operations in Iraq and other war zones. Swedish Law prohibits military sales to states involved in armed conflicts. The immediate potential political implications of this Swedish flank for the international investigations of BAE are huge. In addition, there is another on-going preliminary investigation by prosecutor Christer van der Kwast which should take on great dimensions.
